Bright Country Golf Club has been part of the Ovens Valley community for more than 115 years. What began as a modest gathering of local enthusiasts has grown into a club of more than 520 members with a course widely regarded as one of the finest in regional Victoria. Ours is a story of determination, community and an enduring love of the game.
The club was founded in 1909 by a group of Bright businessmen who shared a passion for golf and a belief that the valley deserved a course of its own. The first recorded meeting took place at the Alpine Hotel on 25 April 1910, where MGG Fox was elected President, Dr LJ Kidd as Vice President and J Robertson as Secretary. Annual membership was set at 10 shillings and sixpence for gentlemen and five shillings for ladies.
In those early decades the club played on private farming properties along what is now Mt Porepunkah Road, relying on the goodwill of local landowners to keep the course alive. It was a different era of club life, built on handshakes and community trust.
By 1937 the club had purchased its first 35 acres of land and in 1950 a further 50 acres were secured from the Manning family, bringing 14 holes onto club-owned ground. A proper clubhouse followed in 1953, converted from an existing house on the property and for the first time the club had a home it could truly call its own

The future of the club changed dramatically following the bushfires of 1982, which swept through a pine plantation on Back Porepunkah Road. While the devastation was significant, it also created an opportunity. Club leaders recognised the potential of the site as a future home for golf and began pursuing what would become a long and complex journey to secure the land.
Negotiations with the Victorian Government gathered momentum and by 1987 the club had secured possession of a 50-hectare site on Back Porepunkah Road. Bordered by the Ovens River and forming part of a green belt protecting the township, the property offered the space and potential to create a modern championship course.
Major earthworks commenced in 1985 and over the following years the new course gradually took shape through the vision, determination and volunteer effort of generations of members. What had once been regarded as unlikely golfing terrain slowly transformed into a course that would become one of regional Victoria's most respected layouts.
The club has continued to grow and develop since the course opened. In 2002 the club hosted the Victorian Senior Amateur Championships, with the VGA President praising the presentation of the course as immaculate. Ongoing investment in course development, guided by the Tony Cashmore Course Development Plan, has seen the layout continually refined and improved.
Today the club is home to more than 520 members and remains one of the most distinctive courses in the state, a place where the golf is matched only by the setting.
That has always been the spirit of this club. Not just champions in the competitive sense, though the club has produced plenty of those over its 115-year history, but champions of community, of the game and of this remarkable corner of Victoria.
We look forward to welcoming you.
